When she is not knee-deep micro-philosophising, Angeline enjoys travelling, looking out for the latest tech, visiting museums and galleries, watching documentaries, reading biographies and people watching. She also enjoys intellectual and philosophical discussions to understand and learn from different perspectives. Once a while, she indulges in binge-watching drama series (alone; so that no one will ask questions). But her real super ability is sleeping for a long, long time without waking. Her record? 20 hours!

Singapore History Wall

Some years back, I curated a space for Anderson Primary School. It is the only space I have done for schools so far.

Why bring this up after almost 10 years?

When the project, a History Wall, was completed, it was not yet our company’s usual practice to document our projects. I simply took some photographs with my limited skills.

Then last year, I was invited back to the school to share with the students my work as a curator. I agreed immediately. The school was now at a temporary location because the original building was undergoing expansion and upgrading.

After the sharing session, the Head of Department (HOD) mentioned that the school had decided to keep the History Wall even though the rest of the building underwent renovation. I was very touched and asked for the HOD to call me when they returned to their Yio Chu Kang campus.

Given that years had passed, I had expected the wall to be in less than tip-top condition. To my surprise on the day of my visit, there was only minor wear and tear. The colours were still vibrant and the curatorial approach was still relevant. Most importantly, the content was still being used by the school even after a decade.

Seeing the wall felt like meeting a long-lost friend. The many grumbles we had while putting together the wall all came back. And now, we could laugh at ourselves for getting worked up over those small matters.

The school will likely put up a new display in two to three years’ time. But that will be a story for another time. Meanwhile, it was second time lucky for me – to be able to properly document this beautiful wall.

Enjoy the photographs!
